 Royal Commission holds first Directions Hearing

Today was the first public sitting of Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory to inform key stakeholders and the public about the nature and scope of the Commission.

Commissioner Margaret White AO and Commissioner Mick Gooda conducted the first Directions hearing which outlined the procedures and processes associated with conducting the Royal Commission.

The Commissioners were joined by Senior Counsel Assisting, Mr Peter Callaghan SC and Mr Tony McAvoy SC who will play a critical role in supporting the work of the Royal Commission, to help ensure it has the highest quality legal expertise for its inquiry.

Critical to the outcomes of the Royal Commission will be the engagement of all parts of the Northern Territory community, in particular, the Aboriginal community.

The Commissioners have issued a Practice Guideline which outlines how the work of the Commission will be carried out to assist parties, witnesses and members of the public.
